For your information, my formal training was in psychology and sociology. I have degrees (with honours) in psychology and sociology, as well as a graduate degree (PhD) in sociology. Prior to my “awakening,” I was primarily interested in issues of power, inequality, and gender. I’m still interested in these things (as you will know if you’ve read my books), only now I bring a “higher perspective” to my understanding.
After my awakening, which was initiated in 2001, I wasn’t very productive as an academic. My difficulty was the rather low opinion that most academics (and academic chelas) have for the “mystical” knowledge, anomalous phenomenon, and non-mainstream (i.e., fringe) areas of inquiry. As a mystic, I certainly found myself on the outs when it came to traditional science. I struggled for a while trying to figure out how to blend the two interests in a way that would at least allow me to find a respectable niche within the academic community. I moved through noetic sciences and humanistic and transpersonal psychology and neuroscience finding interesting things, but being generally unsatisfied about the way each of these disciplines where handling, or not handling, the spiritual truths that I knew to be true. I must admit I am quite enamored with Transpersonal Psychology and the writings of S. Groff but even there, something is missing.
So, what am I going to do?
Well it’s been a few years and I still haven’t come across anything that really make me happy. So, I’ve decided to put together my own “theory” of how it all works. I’m going to take what I know as a mystic and create, as far as possible, a respectable scientific edifice for it. I’m going to “theorize” basically and in the process I’m going to put forward my own grand unified theory of everything. I know it sounds crazy but what can I do? As a mystic I understand how the universe works. Now I just have to find a way to convey that.
Now I know this is going to mean a lot of work, but that’s ok. I’m passionate about this and i don’t mind. And in any case, I’ve already started. I have alot of the theory “in my head” already and even though I haven’t begin a formal systematization, I have done a lot of the groundwork. For example, I’ve created the SpiritWiki and added to that many of the concepts and definitions (like Fabric of Consciousness, Physical Unit, Alignment, Consciousness Quotient) that will form the core. I’ve also begun the process of elaborating a cosmology/theology to provide the ontological foundation and have even setup a site where I can discuss the theory and research it’s veracity (http://casestudy.michaelsharp.org).
But, this is just a start and there is so much to do. Still, if you’re interested, I recommend you start with The Death of Newton: Consciousness, Spirituality, and the Second Scientific Revolution and The Book of Light. You may also want to have a look at The Great Awakening not only because it it provides some basic guidance on introductory spirituality (something I think even the atheists reading this should become familiar with), but also because it provides (along with the Book of Light), some key definitions that are not currently elaborated in a more “scientific” (i.e., obtuse an occluded) form. You may also want to peruse this conceptual map and have a look at this foundations page where I will discuss the main assumptions and foundational concepts of the “edifice” I am putting together.
