Opening to Channel IV - Pitfalls
As you will recall, in previous segments of this channelling series we learned channelling basics. We defined channelling, learned how to open a channel to Spirit, learned how to identify “subtle” channelled messages, learned some stuff about channelling pathology, and even took a quick look at some of the problems that can get in the way of proper spiritual communication. In the rest of this treatise on communication with spirit, I want to go beyond the basics and take a look at common channelling traps and pitfalls that can, if you are not careful, undermine the integrity of both the channeller (i.e., the physical unit) and the channelled messages.
Now thankfully, and perhaps counter to what you might think, identifying pitfalls and traps is neither a difficult nor onerous task, either for me or for you. On the one hand, there are not that many pitfalls to identify for you. On the other hand, the pitfalls themselves are not overly complex or difficult to deal with. Assuming a healthy ego state, solid technique, and a decent understanding of consciousness and your relation to The Fabric, the pitfalls are more like big rocks in your path than anything else. They can certainly trip you up and cause you some pain and grief if you are not looking, but if you got your eyes face forward and your feet firmly on the path, they are easy to avoid and you should have no trouble at all. With that said, let us proceed to discuss our first channelling pitfall, failure to set boundaries.
Failure to set boundaries
Now, one of the first things that you, as a newbie communicator with spirit, must do when you begin to communicate is set boundaries. It’s very important. In fact, it’s critical. If you don’t set boundaries around the bodily consciousness of your physical unit, you can get into all kinds of spiritual and psychological trouble when you start to open to The Fabric.
I’m going to get to the types of trouble you can get into if you fail to set boundaries in a moment. But first I want to give you some proper foundation so that you can understand why boundaries are so important to the Physical Unit when you start to channel. As you’ll see in a moment, it’s different than you might at first think.
Now, if you are going to understand why boundaries are important, you really need to know the full nature and truth of consciousness in creation, and that’s not hard. As you will recall if you have read my Book of Light Volume One, we[1] are all connected together in a fabulously complex, gloriously divine, wonderfully amazing, Fabric of Consciousness.[2] As I explain in The Book of Light, this fabric of consciousness, God with a big “G,” is very much like a “Christmas tree” (see side image) of light spread out and enfolding all of creation. As I explain in the Book of Life, within this Fabric of Consciousness we all exist as intensifications[3] of awareness and although we do develop individual identity and perspective, nevertheless we remain profoundly connected within the Fabric of Consciousness. In fact, all other things being equal, there is simply no disconnect between you and any other “spark of consciousness” within The Fabric.[4]
This is very important so let me repeat it.
All other things being equal, you are totally and one hundred percent connected in The Fabric of Consciousness. This means that, all other things being equal, you have total telepathic connection to any other monad. In fact, all other things being equally you (or rather your monadic consciousness) is awash in a vibrant “thought sea” of consciousness. All other things being equal, you swim in an ocean of awareness that, all other things being equal, you don’t have much control over. Under typical spiritual conditions, the sea of consciousness just washes around you, and you are embedded in the flow like a molecule of water in the ocean of consciousness, coming into contact with molecules around you, exchanging perceptions, and flowing out in a cosmic sea of bliss, awareness, and eternity.
Now is this a bad thing?
Not really.
In pure spirit form, and without all the ugliness of this earth, we are quite happy to float in a sea of consciousness, sharing space with trillions of other intensifications. Normally, we don’t have a problem with that. We have no Hollywood instilled fears of Borg like, insectoid, assimilation into the hive, or issues about sharing our deepest thoughts with those around us. And this goes even while in body as well. Under normal conditions, we are quite happy to be wide open to the sea of consciousness that flows around us, or not. I mean we can be connected or not. We can open and bask in sunlight and consciousness or, we can shut the connection down whenever we want. The truth is, even though we are an intensification of consciousness embedded and profoundly connected within a Fabric of Consciousness, nevertheless we are capable of putting a boundary around our own monadic consciousness.
It’s simple.
As with all things spirit, all we have to do is intend and visualize. Just intend a boundary and visualize its formation. That’s all there is to it.
And why would we want to do that?
Well, different reasons. Sometimes we just feel a need to build a boundary and block off the sea of consciousness that flows around us. For example, sometimes we want to focus on a task and that requires individual concentration and so we need to block out the flow. Other times we may want to develop our own thinking on something without influence from The Fabric. Who knows really? There are lots of different reasons. And who cares why? It’s just important to note that we can.
Now I know I’m kinda contradicting myself here. After coming on strong with a warning about boundaries, now I’m telling that we can have them or not, and that’s quite true. Under more typical spiritual conditions, boundaries surround us or not as we need them, or not. Sadly however, conditions on this earth are no where near “typical.” On this earth, and for reasons explained in The Book of Life, we live in peculiar conditions. Not only are our Physical Units cut off from the Fabric of Consciousness to the point where we believe we are isolated, and that boxed in consciousness is the norm, but the “sea” that we are surrounded by is full of…
Well, let me blunt here.
On this earth the sea of consciousness that underpins this reality is full of shit.
And I ain’t saying that in a good way.
It’s full of yuckiness.
It’s full of pathology, and hatred, and fear, and loathing, and misconception, and lies, and untruths, and half truths and levels of muck and mire that exist nowhere else in the universe but here. It is ugly and yucky and difficult, even painful, to access.
Now normally, that wouldn’t be a problem. Normally, the bright light of your consciousness would just burn through all the darkness and see right to the glorious light of things and that would be the end of it. But like I said above, we aren’t talking about normal conditions here. We’re talking about muck, mire, and darkness AND we are talking about a body, a physical unit, a mind/body pairing that has not seen significant spiritual contact in over thirty thousand years. As a result, it’s a bit rusty. Like an old tube stereo or a classic car which hasn’t been started in a decade, you want to be careful firing it up. If you ask me, it’s inadvisable to just blow the doors of perception wide open. Even if you can manage to handle the bright light of higher consciousness for more than a second or two, there’s still no guarantee you’d be able to properly integrate and ground what you perceived. The consciousness that you tap into when you channel is a world of difference away from what you count as normal consciousness and, being thirty thousand years out of practice, it’s just wise to open gently and slowly.
Now of course, up until right now you haven’t had to worry about such a thing as a boundary between your physical unit and The Fabric. As I noted above (and elsewhere), that is because of the uniquely disconnected existence we have lived while incarnated in a human body. However, the story changes when we begin to open our mind (i.e., the brain of our Physical Unit) to The Fabric. When we do that, when we open the crown chakra[5] and begin to connect then, for reasons that should be clear at this point, boundaries are going to be one of the first things we want to be thinking about. If we don’t, we may be surprised by what we experience and it may not be a pleasant surprise. In fact, given the level of darkness that surrounds us, it can be very discombobulating. It can even, if it gets out of control, lead to negative psychological outcome, even psychosis. So definitely, when you start to open a channel, think about boundaries.
So, how do you create boundaries in consciousness? Well it’s easy. Like most things spiritual, creating boundaries is not rocket science. Indeed, in the very first book on my The Lightning Path, i.e., The Great Awakening, I provided a powerful boundary visualization[6] designed to protect the initiate (that’s you) from uncontrolled access to The Fabric. The boundary visualization was quite simple. My advice in that introductory book was to visualize a little white energy barrier, an energy ball, surrounding you and your life and protecting you from all the slings and arrows of the darkness and discontent around you. This is exactly the same thing you need to do now only now you need to pay more attention to specifics. Now you need to attend to who, what, when, where and why you are going to let things through. For reasons that should be clear (i.e., 30,000 years of inexperience, the yuckiness that surrounds us, etc.), you want to be very specific about what parts of the fabric you are connecting with.
When you’re just staring out, I recommend the following strict boundary guidelines.
1) Set a time and a place for channelled communication. Don’t open up and leave the connection open all day (or all night for that matter). Specify when you will accept messages. Specify a time of day (i.e., the evening), and even a location. Down the road, when the sea of consciousness that surrounds this earth is cleaned up, you will be able to open with unspecified boundaries. But for now, restrict communication to those periods of time when you can devote your full attention to the process of channelling.
2) Be specific about who you are going to channel at first. I recommend sticking with your guide network. In most cases your spirit guides are of similar spiritual lineage and so their vibration, and signatures, and ways of thinking about things, will be similar to yours. Not only that, but your guides know who you are, where you came from, what you’ve done, what you need to do, and why you incarnated on this earth, so even though they may not provide the best answers to some things, they’ll definitely provide the best answer for you for all things.
3) Be specific about what you want to talk about. You can ask specific questions if you want or, when you get comfortable with the idea of more general access, you can simply specify the general tone and content of topics. For example, whenever I channel, whenever I sit down to “feed the fabric” into physicality, I always make it very clear that I only want to talk to entities which have the highest good of all of creation at heart. Normally, i.e., under less yucky conditions, this wouldn’t be an issue. Under less yucky conditions you wouldn’t need to protect yourself in this way. However, on this earth it’s a helpful intent to set because it helps you avoid contact with the muckiness and ugliness of the sea of consciousness that surround us (more on this below).
4) Be specific about why you want to talk. When I sit down and open to spirit, I have very specific topics in mind. Obviously, if you’re reading this, you know my primary interest is in spiritual things and my main reason for channelling is to awaken and empower the people of this planet. And that’s all fine and good, but that might not be your primary interest. You might have an interest in music, for example, or physics or chemistry or whatever and that is perfectly fine. I mean, don’t get the mistaken notion that the only thing you can talk about with Spirit is spirit. That’s a totally bogus notion and you should disabuse yourself of it right now. Frankly, I don’t believe we need anybody else talking about spiritual things at this point. Instead, what we need is people talking to the higher intelligence of their monadic consciousness (or their guides) about other things like the economy or technology or politics or the problems in their life or whatever. If you want to know about spirit, read my books. But if you want to get the most out of your channelling experience, and maybe even slide into your life’s purpose and reason for incarnating here, then connect with the fabric and talk with them for reasons that are appropriate for you and about topics that are close to your heart
Now, assuming you take my advice on controlled opening and the establishment of boundaries, you shouldn’t have any trouble. However, if for some reason you’ve been channelling without boundaries, if for some reason (perhaps as a result of the ascending vibration of this planet) you have had spontaneous eruptions into The Fabric for which you have been unprepared, or if your Physical Unit has some lingering ego weaknesses that may jeopardize the integrity of your channelling experience, then what follows is an outline of some of the problems which you should look out for. If you notice any of these problems arising, and especially if you feel you are approaching a point where your physical unit is in danger of losing its grip, then either build that boundary up and stop channelling altogether for a while, or seek assistance from somebody who knows about channelling and can help you orient, navigate, and understand the process as it relates to the expansion of consciousness into your body of which, it is important to note, channelling is only the first step.

If you read that book, the meaning of the preceding paragraph will become clear.
