What’s wrong with the word “God,” huh?
So recently I had some guy (I assume it’s a guy by the energy of the comment he left) wander over to my site. He looked around for a little while and then posted some dismissive and unsubstantive criticism of the site which, because it was unsubstantive, I pretty much ignored. Still, he did make one comment that caused me to pause. He criticized the fact that I had used the word “God” on the site. Nay. It wasn’t a criticism. He actually said I had insulted his intelligence by my use of the word “God” on the site.
Wow.
I read that and I really had to pause and ask myself, what was insulting about the word “God.”
Well, you know, I didn’t have to think too long. As a former recovering catholic, turned unconcerned agnostic, cum Marxist atheist, transformed into global spiritual mystic and world teacher, I knew the answer to that pretty much instantly. It wasn’t rocket science. He was insulted by my use of the word God because of the way that word has been used to oppress, suppress, and justify pretty much every single horrific event that has ever occurred on this earth.
It’s true right?
Why did the peasants suffer under the rule of elitist monarchs in the middle ages?
Oh, that’s the way “God” wanted it, we were told.
Why do the armies march and kill in the middle east?
Well, God wants us to fight the infidels.
Why were the natives of North America colonized so brutally and thoroughly.
God wanted us to bring the message of Jesus to the heathens, in any way we could.
Why are so many people poor on this world?
Well, God’s got a plan.
And why do so many people suffer, die in accidents, or disease, or on the streets?
God’s got “his” reasons.
Right?
Isn’t this the way it goes?
Every single horrific event on this earth is God’s fault, or so we are told.
God’s got a plan you know.
You may be too stupid to figure it out, but don’t you worry, God’s got a plan.
No wonder the guy was insulted. I mean, any reasonably intelligence person would look at that cosmological and philosophical justification and wonder, whose zooming who?
I understood why he was insulted.
I use to think that way too.
After all, I’m reasonably intelligent (or at least I like to think) and I can see when people are making excuses in order to justify bad behavior, just like everyone else. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist. And you know, because of the blasphemous misuse of the name of God to justify the horror and oppression on this earth, for a long time I wouldn’t use that “God” word either. As a reasonably intelligent person it was obvious to me. “God” was something the elites used to keep the slaves of this planet (a.k.a. the masses) on a short cosmological leash. It kept them in control and working hard. As a result for me (and for so many others), God is the world’s only three letter, four letter word. You just don’t use it in polite company.
But then, something happened to me that changed everything. I literally became a wool dyed, card carrying, union supporting mystic and in the process (which I won’t go into here), my whole opinion of God, Spirit, consciousness, life, the universe, and everything changed. I went from being bitter and angry at having been deceived by all the gurus, priests, and elitist leaders of the world to “wow, who would have thought??”
Ya, it was amazing, to me at least. By now it’s been about six years and I no longer have any problem tossing around the world “God.”
God. god. GOD.
See.
It doesn’t bother me at all to see that word and in fact, I now feel that any reasonably intelligent person who has some understanding of the underlying cosmological principles of reality, and a basic grasp of authentic spirituality, coupled with some good old fashion personal experience of spiritual realities, shouldn’t have any problem with that word at all. But then, when I see that word I don’t think about it like anybody else does. I don’t see some finger wagging patriarch smacking his children around for every little transgression. I don’t see some cosmic mad scientist engaged in some twisted and violent cosmic evolutionary experiment. And I definitely don’t use the word to justify all the shit and abuse that occurs on this planet.
No way man.
If you’ve done something bad, if you steal from the poor to give to the rich (like every government in the world has recently done), if you start a war just to steal somebody’s resources, if you colonize somebody else’s country, if you live in a castle (no matter size) with slaves while children starve and die around you, it’s on you baby. You don’t get to blame God for your own bad behavior.
So how do I see God?
What is my cosmology/theology and how does it redeem the word “God” from the blasphemous superstition, misrepresentation and misuse?
Well, apart from hinting at the distinction I make between God with a big “G” and god with a little “g”, I can’t go into detail here. It’s not that it’s complicated, mind you. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist, but it does take more explanation than I can fit into a little web window like this. If you’re interested, you can read all about it by downloading my free eBook The Book of Light: The Nature of God, the Structure of Consciousness, and the Universe Within You. It’s available on this page here. Read it and then you decide.
